Ben and Adrie Lester, founders of Wheatberry, share a passion for real, delicious, and health giving foods, commitment to long term improvements in our community, and a burning desire to help create a culture of sustainable resource usage and ecosystem stabilization. These have been the guiding principles in the development of both the bakery and our farm in Shutesbury, MA as well as the creation of The Pioneer Valley Heritage Grain CSA.
In 2005 we restarted the Belchertown Farmers market and began growing and baking for market. From day one the response has been resounding! As well as a devoted and growing line of customers, we were awarded “The Young Entrepreneurs of the Year” award from the Small Business Administration in 2008, and then awarded a grant from The USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program in 2010 for our sustainable community development. We have been featured in the Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, and The Atlantic.
Most important is the community development providing local jobs, buying from other local and organic growers, and stewarding the land on our 4.5 acre farm in Shutesbury. With dreams of a cleaner, brighter, more ecologically responsible future we forge ahead, determined to find a way to live and work in a way in line with our values and goals. We thank you for your support and look forward to building together the world we want to live in.
“We make the road by walking.”
